Unpacking the contents: An overview of what's inside the box
First thing to note, is that this is a big set! The JMBricklayer Space Planet Station has over 2800 pieces. While there are 14 steps to the build, there are actually more like 20 bags of parts in total, sorry I lost count.
Check out the thickness of the instruction manual! Don't worry though, the instructions are clear and concise. All 177 pages of them!
The set comes with a small sticker sheet which I did not use on my Space Station.
Included with the Space Planet station is this LED disc which comes with a USB-C rechargeable battery! It even comes with the charging cable.
Building the Set
The next set of pictures you see is the progression of the build as I follow the instructions in the manual. I'll provide some building tips and recommendations along the way.
Here is the base of the set.
Lots of nice printed printed parts that I can see, and not too many stickers which I like.
In stages 3, 4 and 5 we have built the spine which is connected to the base and will securely hold the space station globe.
Here in stage 7, I'm just doing a preliminary test fit to make sure that there are no problems when I do the final assembly.
Stages 8 and 9 construct all of the jointed panels that are then installed to the center ring. So far, all of the technic components are holding up well.
In this final stage of the lower sphere, you can see all of the details that make up the interior to give it the curved shape. It's neat to see how it all comes together.
I call this part of the set, the turntable. The turntable will be the surface area of the exposed Space Station.
Of all the steps, Stage 14 is the trickiest! You have to properly connect the turntable onto the lower part of the sphere. I had some trouble with pieces around the edge of the turntable falling off as I tried to manhandle it. Some pieces actually fell inside the sphere, so I had to remove one of the blue panelled section to retrieve the pieces and put them back on. Take your time on this part of the build and success will be yours!
The JMBricklayer Space Planet Station 70006 looks amazing and makes a great display piece. The bonus LED light really makes the set shine!
Final Thoughts and Recommendation
I found out that there are quite a few similarities in the construction of the JMBricklayer 70006 Space Planet Station and the Lego Globe 21332. I looked at the Lego instructions and the central ring and panel construction look to use the same techniques. However the Lego Globe set retails for $229 USD and the JMBricklayer Space Planet Station is half the cost but with bonus LED lighting, making it a great deal.
This is a really big set that will keep you entertained for hours and hours. The bricks are really good quality and I'm wondering if they are using Gobricks as their brick supplier. I really liked the rubber legs under the base to keep the set sturdy. The curved spine was solid and never twisted or bent under the weight of the space station globe.
The lower half of the sphere was a bit repetitive when constructing and installing the panels, but the techniques used to secure them was top notch. I didn't have any lose panel sections and they held up well when I lifted it up.
I also liked that the charge port for the LED light and switch were easily accessible. The miniature buildings and vehicles on the space station platform were very cool to see. The curved shell pieces of the globe fit perfectly and weren't scratched or hazy.
I did have an issue with the central technic pin being too short, so I'm not sure if this was a problem with the set or an error on my part when I inserted it into the center of the sphere. Luckily the issue was merely cosmetic and did not affect the function of the space station. In fact, it still turns freely without the top cog part.
